Retail News: Macy’s to close Almeda Mall location as part of larger cuts

Macy’s has announced they will close the Almeda Mall location sometime this year. This closing includes 65 other stores across the U.S. and is part of a plan to cut 150 stores by the end of this year. The store initially opened as a Foley’s in 1966. Almeda Mall and its twin Northwest Mall were first proposed by Foley’s, although developed by another company. The closing has been a standard prediction for Houston since Macy’s announced their plans last year. Anecdotally, a visit to the location last summer by myself and Pseduo3d of Carbon-izer.com revealed that the store was in rough shape. While it was doing good business, it was hard to ignore the flooring held down by duct tape. The expected closing is before the end of March 2025, but nothing is set in stone yet. With the departure of Macy’s, Almeda Mall will be left without any traditional anchors. The Macy’s property, which is separately owned from the rest of the mall, will likely be put up for sale. While the closing has been long predicted, it will likely have a negative impact on the mall.

  1. When I was a kid, this was the (only) mall in the area. It was a rare to treat to shop in that part of the mall when it was Foley’s but we usually made our purchases on the JC Penney side. Budget…

  2. Considering the current trajectory of Macy’s, it isn’t a surprise to see the Almeda store go. At this point all the other stores in the Greater Houston do good enough to stay open. The only way I could see any of the other Houston stores go is if Macy’s closes all or nearly all of their stores.

As for Almeda mall, this is probably the beginning of the end.
