Random Retail: Foodarama Follies, Vintage BK at night and Wok D’Lite!

Howdy, folks, and welcome back to HHR! Today, we’re taking it easy as we slide into Thanksgiving with another Random Retail! Even though my last Random Retail wasn’t that long ago, I feel I should key new readers in. These Random Retail posts are photos that were taken without a post in mind, but I still feel they are worth sharing. There’s not much to say story-wise with most of these, but sit back, relax, …

Retail News: Kitchen United Mix closes their Houston Kroger outpost

After about a year and a half of operation, the ghost kitchen inside the N Shepherd & 11th Kroger has called it quits. Kitchen United Mix first announced a partnership with Kroger in 2021, with a location opening in a Los Angeles Ralph’s in early 2022. The Houston location was the first of two in Texas and the first specifically in a Kroger; the second in the state would be in Dallas. Upon opening in …

Another life long dead mall the Southwest Deauville Fashion Mall

Howdy, folks, and welcome back to HHR. In this post, we’re looking at another one of the former Deauville Fashion Malls, which has spent the last 20 years hidden in plain sight. Before we dive into the Southwest Deauville Mall in the tiny town of Meadows, let’s first talk about the history of Deauville in general. The Deauville Corporation was founded in the early 1970s to build apartments to keep up with the steadily rising …

Burger House Episode 2: The one in Spring

Howdy, folks, and welcome back to HHR. Today, we’re going back to Burger House. No, not the one we went to a few weeks ago, still operating as a Church’s Chicken, but rather a decommissioned location in Spring (1609 Spring Cypress Rd, Spring, TX 77388). This is the second of three Burger Houses we’ll be visiting, and in today’s post, I want to expand a bit on what I feel are some of the issues …

Double Checking our ‘newest’ Kroger’s Gas Station

In honor of the second to last TYOK post being published this Wednesday, I thought it appropriate to close out the week with another light Kroger post. This a return to a store we visited a couple of weeks back. The new “Hispanic” Kroger in the Almeda area. When visiting the main store, the conclusion I came to was that while it was a nice Krogering experience, there wasn’t too much “Hispanic” about the store …

Happy Halloween Houston! This Year I’m dressing up as an Almeda Mall anchor

Howdy folks, and welcome back to Houston Historic Retail, and happy almost Halloween! Today, we’re taking another “stab” at a nearly five-year-old tradition and visiting some “costumed conversions.” These of course, are vacant retail stores that are temporarily “dressed up” as a Halloween pop-up shop. These costume conversions are one of those magical things that have crossed the retail barrier into mainstream pop culture. Tons of different Costume Conversions Memes have shown up on the …

HHR’s first visit to a Sellers Bros and the Weingarten’s Gerland’s connection

Howdy folks, and welcome back to Houston Historic Retail! In this episode, we’re going somewhere we’ve never been before, so you know it’s special! Today, we’ll be visiting HHR’s first Sellers Bros. Well, at least, the first full store, as the two free-standing C-Stores were featured on HHR a few years back. This example at 9494 Hammerly Blvd, Houston, TX 77080, originally started life in 1979 as a Weingarten’s, and has a cool story. Weingarten’s …

Retail News: El Bolillo comes closer to opening Mission Bend location

Mainstay Panderia, El Bolillo, is coming closer to opening its newest location, at Highway 6 and Bellaire. The Hispanic Bakery, which first opened its doors across from Canino’s Farmers Market in 1998, has become a popular option for many Houstonians, who compliment the small chain’s selection compared to other Hispanic bakeries around town. This new location is using a former Luby’s for its new outfit. While the Cafeteria ceased operations in the early 2000s, Luby’s …

Has Farm Stores “bought the farm” in Houston?

Over the last three years, HHR has been keeping an eye on a Florida-based “C-Store adjacent” concept, Farm Stores, which first announced its intent to come to Houston in 2016. While their first planned Katy location would not work out, they would eventually arrive in 2020. Farm Stores isn’t exactly a new idea, with the concept debuting in the late 50s. It’s somewhat reminiscent of a drive-thru liquor store but swaps hard alcohol for an …

The future of the vacant Wilcrest Foodarama

Howdy, folks, and welcome back to HHR. Today, we’re taking what will likely be our final visit to the Wilcrest ex-Foodarama. As is customary, this is a post-closure post taking a look at the remains of the former store. Towards the end of the article, we’ll even discuss what’s upcoming for the corner lot. As mentioned in our first post, this building started in the 1970s as a Safeway. It was a unique pickup for …
