About
Welcome! I’m glad you’re here. My name is Mike, and Houston Historic Retail is a personal project of mine. This website is a labor of love and is supported by great contributions from readers. Most of the information on this website is from my own personal research. However, some outside sources are used, and I try to notate them all.
Any logos, images, or other graphic shown on this website is the property of their original owner. As such, they may be removed at the owner’s request using the contact information below.
Some content is generated by guest bloggers, and some research is provided by readers of the blog. An effort is made to notate all such contributions. No one on Houston Historic Retail holds any relationship with any company featured unless otherwise noted.
How to use this site
The website is divided into two separate sections. The blog (the home page) deals with general retail and Houston topics. All other pages (accessed from the menu) are dedicated to the history of stores in Houston.
I do NOT have or hold any relationship to the companies featured on this website. Photos and information may not always reflect current information.
Many articles link to Houston Chronicle archives. The links are meant to be shareable but may require a Houston Public Library card to log in.

Can you give me the Conroe and Tomball locations on Houston Historic Retail?
Um, which grocery stores entered Houston in the 1960s and the 1970s?
I would like for you to do a Brookshire Brothers location in Conroe, Magnolia, and Tomball!
Can you give me the list of Kroger Greenhouse locations on Houston Historic Retail?
Can you give me the Hexa-Shell locations on Houston Historic Retail?
Sorry I don’t have a list of Hexa-Shell locations.
Can you give me the Krogersons locations on Houston Historic Retail?
Hi Gage, I don’t have a list of Krogerstons. The easiest way would probably be to visit the Albertsons page, and search for Kroger. Most of the locations that converted should be labeled.
I would also like for you to do A Brookshire Brothers locations on Houston Historic Retail
Do a Brookshire Brothers on Houston Historic Retail!
I would like for you to do Kroger on Houston Historic Retail!
Good idea! I do plan on covering Kroger at some point. In the meantime though you can read about Henke & Pillot the chain which Kroger purchased to enter Houston. It even covers Kroger’s operation of the chain. https://houstonhistoricretail.com/grocery/henke-pillot/
In addition to what Mike said about the Henke & Pillot page, Mike, billytheskink, and I did a year-long project on HHR last year documenting the history of several Houston Kroger locations. Each blog post from The Year of Kroger series has some general history about Kroger’s presence in Houston so it might be worth checking out if you want to read more about Kroger in Houston.
