GFS, Gordon Food Service, opened its newest retail outlet in the greater Houston area on March 26th. The new location, located at 2402 45th St, Galveston, TX 77550, is the first bulk store on the Island and the first new grocery chain to arrive since HEB’s stint in the former Safeway (1990-2008). This new GFS location actually takes the place of a Gerland’s, which closed over 20 years ago. This store will also be the first in Texas to debut the new banner of “Gordon Restaurant Market.” According to a representative from GFS, the Restaurant Market banner is meant to help appeal to a core group, which is small business owners. However, it seems that the product mix will largely be similar to existing GFS locations, although I will be sure to visit the Island to check out the new store. GFS reps also mentioned to HHR that the next store to open, Humble, would also use the Gordon Restaurant Market name. According to permits filed last year, other stores are in the works on Griggs and Spencer Highway. GFS did not comment on when these stores are set to open or what banner they will use.

It didn’t take the place of a Gerland’s…in the early 2010s the roof collapsed (it was just a shell); sometime around 2019-2020 this was completely demolished.
