Visiting the first new thrift store on Westheimer, Texas Thrift

Howdy, folks, and welcome back to HHR. Today, we’re heading back to a thrift store, a place we haven’t been in quite a while! I’m a lifelong thrifter and come from a long line of thrift store shoppers. My grandparents were the most smitten with thrift shops. My grandparents, who were born just before the Depression, would often make a weekend out of hitting up Salvation Army and Goodwill, in addition to many independent and …

Retail News: Forever 21 closing for Uniqlo’s first Houston location

The Forever 21 in Memorial City Mall is preparing to close for Houston’s first Uniqlo location. The store is a Japanese-owned casual wear outfitter which only offers private-label merchandise. The retailer has been on an aggressive growth path over the past few years and initially filed permits to open a Houston store at the Galleria in Fall 2020. However, these plans obviously fell through, and permits filed recently indicate Uniqlo plans to renovate this soon-to-be …

Luby’s in Cypress has Closed, but this doesn’t mean much

Howdy, folks, and welcome back to HHR. Today, we’re talking about the state of Luby’s. It’s been a while since I’ve talked about Luby’s on the blog. However, anyone following my social media knows I often stop by Luby’s. So buckle up for some pedantry into what’s been happening at Luby’s. Going back a few years, most of Luby’s troubles seem to have started when they began purchasing other chains. The two best-known buyouts were …

Giving Layne’s Chicken Fingers the benefit of the doubt

Howdy folks, and welcome back to Houston Historic Retail! Today, we’re doing something I generally try to avoid by rehashing an old topic, Layne’s Chicken Fingers, or the A&M Version of Raising Canes. To make it a bit unique, we are visiting the “Layne’s Express” on Ella. To make a long story short, Layne’s was the first “chicken finger restaurant” to open up in Texas. The history of chicken finger chains is pretty deep; it …

Houston’s TGI Fridays closings go deeper than the two reported locations

Thank God It’s Friday! Today, we’re covering the recent closings of multiple TGI Friday’s locations in Houston. If you’ve paid attention to any national news lately, then it shouldn’t come as a surprise that TGI Friday’s closed 36 restaurants, two of which were in Houston (shoutout to HHR reader Kirk who was the first person to share a location list with the Houston location in it). These closing lists have been making headlines for years. …

The infamous postcard on the wall where stores never opened at the Mall of the Mainland. Nikki's address and hometown is completely made up, but it is interesting to note that 77060 is Greenspoint Mall's Zip code. Perhaps at the time this post card was painted, the Mall of the Mainland did have more worthwhile shopping and entertainment options than Greenspoint Mall. That's not saying much though. I will say that shopping at the Mall of the Mainland was a vacation if you wanted to spend time in a public space and didn't want to see anyone else! It was paradise for those who wanted peace and quiet. (From the Anonymous in Houston retail photo collection)

A Look Back at Houston Retail in January 2014 with Anonymous in Houston’s Photo Collection

Editor’s Note: Today’s post is a guest submission from HHR’s good friend Anonymous in Houston Happy new year, Houston Historic Retail readers! Today’s topic is a bit of a random retail post. Those of you familiar with my guest blog posts here at HHR know that while I enjoy discussing retail history, I am not much of a retail photographer. The wonderful retail photographers out there deserve a lot of credit for their skill in …

Graphic created by HHR to represent all the stores under the La Michoacana umbrella.

We need to talk about La Michoacana

Howdy folks, and welcome back to Houston Historic Retail. Today, we’re taking a deep dive into what might arguably be Houston’s largest grocer, La Michoacana El Ahorro, Sellers Bros, Arlans, et al. For those of you wondering why I’m taking on what you might consider a “small fry” in the Houston grocery market, hold on to your butts unless you work for LMM; this company is bigger than you think. Before we start, I have …

CVS goes on an AARP Approved Diet in Northwest Houston

Howdy folks, Happy New Year, and welcome back to HHR! Today, we have something brand new: the beginning of a CVS experiment in Houston. The skinny on this “CVS Diet” is that it appears to be the first of many planned conversions of CVS stores into Oak Street Health Clinics. The plan’s start in Houston is coincidental, as Walgreens began a similar experiment here in 2019. However, Walgreen’s commitment to the area was more tied …
