Retail News: Kroger plans to close second Houston area store this year

The Dickinson Kroger has been open at this location since 1980. The right portion of the building was originally a SupeRx.

2025 is certainly shaping up to not be “The Year of Kroger” for the Houston division. According to news that broke last week, Kroger will be vacating its longtime home at 3410 Gulf Fwy, Dickinson, TX 77539. With the impending closure of the Sterling Ridge Kroger, this will be the second Houston Division location to close this year. Word on the street is that Kroger’s last day of operation will be around June 10th. However, what has not been revealed is why Kroger is closing this store. It is the only grocer within Dickinson, and other than the proposed reopening of Zeigler’s Foods, it doesn’t seem like it’ll be changing anytime soon. So what’s got Kroger down? Well, there’s a likely chance that lease conditions have become unfavorable for this store, and while not in Dickinson, HEB is planning a store in nearby Lago Mar, although no concrete development has been made on that store. The store already sits between an HEB to the North and a Walmart to the South, which provide competition. To a lesser extent, these Houston-based closings likely offset some of the hardship Kroger took when HEB began its push into Dallas. While nothing has been said publicly, more Kroger closings may follow these two stores as the year progresses. This Kroger was initially mentioned on HHR during Anonymous in Houston’s The Year Kroger post for Texas City. A bit of history and a photo of the store as a Greenhouse location can be found in this post.
