Howdy, folks, and welcome back to HHR. Today, we’re taking a trip all the way up to Splendora to check out Archie’s Food Basket, which is not actually a taxidermy hall of fame but could quickly become one! Before we dig in, let’s go over the brief history I found. Archie’s opened around 1985 but has older roots in the community. It all started with a single superette in Splendora purchased by Archie Barrilleaux. The modern definition has become a synonym for a convenience store, but true superettes were larger than that, selling fresh groceries and gasoline. The original name seems to have been “Splendora Grocery.” Spending the late 70s and early 80s operating superettes across Montgomery County would come to an end when Splendora’s need for a supermarket reached its peak in the mid-80s, and thus, Archie’s Food Basket was born!
Archie’s opened around 1985 and has been going strong ever since. From what I can gather, it was originally backed by Fleming, as Food Basket was one of the names independents could use as part of a co-op-like chain, with other separately owned Food Basket locations closer to Houston. Unlike other Food Basket locations, which faltered after Fleming’s bankruptcy, Archie’s has soldiered on, switching alliances to Grocers Supply along the way. In addition to being the only grocery store in the community, Archie’s is also a personal monument to Archie himself via his taxidermy mounts. From bears to bucks and puma to pronghorn, both domestic and foreign games are on display for the public to enjoy (or hate, depending on your stance) while you shop. Archie passed away just over a month ago, but his family continues owning and operating the store as of this article.
I saw Archie’s Food Basket on Google Maps a few years ago and was really intrigued by the unique decor. It is good to get the full story on the operation and a ‘stour’ of the place. Taxidermy aside, it is an interesting looking supermarket. It looks like a classy operation which is comfortable to shop at with nice colorful decor, proper ceilings and floors, and a good variety of groceries. As for the taxidermy, some will love it, some will hate it, some will be spooked by it, lol. While the suburbs continue to expand out, even on the NE side, I suspect most shoppers in Splendora aren’t too bothered by it. Hopefully Archie’s family will continue to run this place well.
