Retail News: Walgreens closes prototype Northwest Houston store

Walgreens has ended an experiment in Northwest Houston by closing its location at 12620 Farm to Market 1960 Rd W, Houston, TX 77065. The store opened about two years ago, replacing a full-sized location across the street. The prototype store was the first of its kind in Houston, and the location was downsized to everything but the bare essentials. It was mainly a pharmacy, but it did carry a small assortment of snacks, medical supplies, …

Retail News: pOpshelf closing multiple Houston area locations

Early last month, retailer Dollar General announced it would close 141 stores by the end of the year. The closings would be split between 96 Dollar General stores and 45 pOpshelf locations. pOpshelf is a concept Dollar General uses to compete with retailers like Five Below, skewing to younger, more affluent shoppers. The closings are not unheard of as Dollar General keeps a relatively healthy base of stores, but the much smaller footprint of pOpshelf …

The closing of the Alemda Macy's makes the Willowbrook Mall location the oldest ex-Foley's in its original building. (The Memorial City branch is older, but has moved)

Retail News: Macy’s closing at Alemda Mall raises questions about the mall’s future

The Macy’s at Almeda Mall took in its final customers last Sunday during its going-out-of-business sale. The store, which opened as Foley’s in 1966, actually predated the mall. The department store proposed the shopping center, and the Rouse Company constructed it. With Macy’s now closed, the store lacks any major anchors. Burlington, which occupied the former JCPenney since 2009, moved out about two years ago and, other than Spirit Halloween, has not held any tenants. …

With the Hedwig Village OfficeMax Closing Soon, We Remember OfficeMax’s Glory Days In Houston

Editor’s Note: Today’s post is a guest submission from HHR’s good friend Anonymous in Houston with the photos taken by Mike Sometimes retail blog posts just don’t go as planned. This is the case with this post. Only a few weeks ago, Mike and I discussed the possibility of us doing a blog post about OfficeMax and Staples’ small presence in the Houston area in current times. Both names are so rare in Houston these …

Harvest Market a grocery chain in Houston you probably haven’t heard of

Howdy folks, and welcome back to Houston Historic Retail. This week, we’re looking at what could rightfully be considered Houston’s newest Supermarket Chain. Harvest Market stores feature everything you’d find in a standard Supermarket, Perishables, Pantry Foods, Service Departments, and even a pharmacy at some stores. However, they’d prefer it if you called them a “Grocerant” instead. No, a Grocer-rant isn’t a long-winded complaint about customers. Instead, it’s a grocery store that also serves as …

Sears Willowbrook Mall Experiment is Closing

The Sears Hometown located inside of Willowbrook Mall has started the closing process for their store a short six months after opening. The scheme was a way to put former Sears Mall buildings and a few former Kmarts to use as prospective tenants for this former mainline store, which closed in 2020, failed to step up. The closure was first reported to HHR by regular contributor Anonymous in Houston, who noticed a Google Review stating …

So long Rice, and thanks for all the Epicuriousness

After nearly 85 years of operation, the final Rice Grocery store will close its doors for good today. While this isn’t coming out of the blue, it’s still a sad event to have to witness. While many of us remember Rice as the exotic Epicurean chain, the company served many people of many different backgrounds under many different names during its tenure. The building that housed this final Epicurean location will once again find another …

Retail News: James Coney closes final inner-loop location, and provides some thoughts on the future

James Coney Island’s final inner-loop store shut down earlier this week. The news of the closure was quiet but shouldn’t come as a huge surprise for anyone who has been following the slow death of the chain. While JCI managed to hang on past the Millennium, it seems very little has been invested in the hot dog seller over the past 20 years. With locations stagnant and sales slipping, a 2018 initiative to push the …
