Retail News: Shoppers World confirmed as coming to Houston

Shopper’s World is in the process of finishing out the former Target space in the Steeplechase Center seen here in 2021.

Houston Historic Retail first reported that New York-based Shoppers World is planning on bringing one of their discount department stores to Houston last October. While the company has yet to release any official statement on its new Houston store, its list of locations has been updated to include 10701C Jones Road, Houston, TX 77065. This Shoppers World would be the second location in Texas after their first opened in a former Bealls at South Park Mall just over a year ago. The discount department store is closer to Belk in its offerings than Bealls.

    1. Good question, George. I’ve reached out to Shopper’s World but have not received a response. I will post an update when I do.

  1. I would be hesitant to enter a space Target couldn’t make work. I mean who doesn’t love Target?
Shoppers World must know what they are doing.

    1. Target didn’t “fail” here, they merely moved to a newer store about a mile west of this site, next to an also-new (at the time) Home Depot store back in 2006. Surprisingly they didn’t build a SUPERTARGET store even though the new Target is across the street from a Walmart Supercenter (which of course has a complete “food store” section) as well as a very busy KROGER store which originally was built as a short-lived ALBERTSONS store.

  2. Shoppers World isn’t exactly the kind of store I get excited about, but I know these TJX type stores do get many people excited. In fact, many years ago, this shopping center once had a TJMaxx in the old Weinway spot. Although this isn’t the kind of store I’ll probably shop at a lot, I am excited to see another traditional retailer fill a vacant spot at the Steeplechase shopping center. It is better than the gym that was there before as well.

That FM 1960 & Jones corner is turning into a bargain hunting corner with Shoppers World, Ollie’s, Big Lots, Goodwill, 99 Cents Only, and others. At least these retail centers are still able to draw a crowd.
