Last weekend, the Kroger at 13133 Veterans Memorial Dr, Houston, TX 77014, near Bammel North Houston Road, quietly shut its doors for good. This store is the fifth Kroger in the Houston area to close in 2025. The closings are part of a broader restructuring plan where Kroger aims to close around 60 locations nationwide. Houston’s other Kroger closings included locations in The Woodlands, Dickinson, two in West Houston, and now this location. A commonality between these stores is their opening date. Except for the Woodlands location, all of these were ’80s stores; the Woodlands location opened in 2000 and had been haunted for years by an HEB opening directly across the street. Kroger has been much more focused on DFW, opening a store in Plano and another in Fort Worth this year. Houston has received relatively low priority, with our biggest story being a new fuel center that opened without much publicity. Kroger has not opened a new store in the Houston area since 2018.
