This week in demolition we see a full plate of residential demolitions, and only two non-residential structures… Except that isn’t exactly true, as evidence by the photo below. I’ve been corresponding with a reader who has been keeping me aware of the demolition of a Boston Market on Jones Road, near 1960. I had already been made aware of another project across the street, that I was easily able to pull permits on, so why I saw nothing on this now gone Boston Market was somewhat confusing. Anyone living in Houston is already aware that our borders are confusing. It’s not unusual to drive through multiple enclaves of two differing cities along a main road. Unfortunately, deciphering Houston’s borders becomes even more difficult when you bring permitting into the mix. That’s where extraterritorial jurisdictions come into play, these are basically the parts of the city that “say Houston on their mailing address but aren’t in the city limits” or, “if you call 911 Harris County Sheriffs will come instead of HPD”. While neither of these are 100% true, they’re pretty good guidelines of identifying ETJ. These parts of Houston are also not required to file permits with the city (as far as I know) and must only comply with County, and State permitting. To try and unravel what is and isn’t Houston, you can use this map (Layers -> Administrative Boundaries -> City of Houston ETJ) although, it’s not very user friendly.
