Greenspoint Mall closed last month, according to major news outlets. I was contacted multiple times about my lack of coverage and was even accused of being “asleep at the wheel.” The reality is that I had heard through the pipeline that Greenspoint Mall had at least another few weeks left. However, my source, who asked to remain anonymous, also asked me to withhold the information, as they weren’t 100% sure this would occur. My own visit to Greenspoint Mall before the supposed closure revealed that the handful of stores still operating were heavily stocked and not ready to close. Since the supposed August 1st closing date, multiple HHR readers, and even Je of the Southern Retail Blogspot, had all heard the rumor that the mall was still operating, and a few social media users took it upon themselves to make one last pilgrimage to Greenspoint and shared their visits online. At this point, only rumors and loose talk exist about how long Greenspoint stays open, but I would wager it’s somewhere between two weeks and a month. According to reports, the fitness center of the mall will likely remain open for a bit longer. The former Sears, where the parking is being redeveloped as apartments, appears to be still used by the construction crews for storage.

Saturday afternoon update. Looks like some work is going on inside of the former Uniform Superstore/Palais Royal. From what I could see some of the kiosk businesses from the mall are setting up shop inside. People were getting turned away at the door so whatever is going on there is not ready yet. Even though the mall is closed, at least the old junior anchor may reopen to the public. Hopefully they will do an update on the news articles if this space does indeed reopen.
Here is an update from today at around noon. The last 2 mall entrances are chained or locked shut. I did a full walk around of the mall. I was hoping to get one last visit, but it wasn’t in the cards.
Fitness Connection and maybe the Boxing Gym in the back are the last places left. There is no signage about the closure, but pretty much all of doors have been boarded up. Macy’s has a nasty moldy odor that you can smell while walking along the sidewalks in front of the building.
Thanks for the update, it’s sad, but not unexpected.
Mike, you have been the most consistent and active retail news source here in the Houston area for a long time now. News outlets are way behind the curve when announcing their stories. Just look at how long it took them to find out West Oaks Mall closed. They are also looking to sensationalize stories to get people talking and clicking. We are the true eyes and ears of the community. It really disappoints me that someone would talk negatively about you, when you spend countless hours of your free time creating awesome content.
The whole Greenspoint situation has been weird these past few weeks. This is also not the first time that the news stations have said the mall is closing. Back in 2017, there was supposedly a 60 day notice going out for the mall to close permanently. Either way, we know the mall is on the verge of closing and has been for quite some time. When the mall will officially close has yet to be confirmed.

Thank you very much! HHR wouldn’t exist without trailblazers like you.
