Big Lots, as part of its bankruptcy, has eyed four more Houston area locations for closure since the previous round, bringing the total number of stores closing in our area to eight. The newly announced stores are in Pearland, Tomball, and Katy, along with one in Houston at Westheimer and Gessner. These closures represent not only a restructuring but also an attempt to shift the company’s focus back to Closeouts from the dumpy Kmart-like facade the store has become known for over the past ten or so years. While there has not been any direct comment from Big Lots, they’re likely banking on operating in locations where Ollie’s Bargain Outlet does not. This shift will end with lots of vacant retail space in Houston; however, if the recent departure of 99 Cents Only is any indication, these spaces will likely not stay vacant for long. It’s possible that in some scenarios, Ollie’s or other discounters may try to move into these spaces. As of this post, Big Lots operates about 18 stores in the greater Houston area, and these closings will leave them with around 10. It has yet to be revealed if this will be the final round of closures.
