For the past few months, many have waited with bated breath for Sugar Land to finally have its own Trader Joe’s, and come Thursday, October 24th, it will be a reality. The Aldi-owned natural foods store has been planning the location at Univeristy Blvd and Highway 59, in a former Sprouts, for the better part of a year, and after pushing back the date, the store seems ready to open. Trader Joe’s began applying for permits in March of this year, and work on the ground began over the summer. While employees and Sugar Land city officials initially planned for an October 15th opening, this was pushed back about a week for undisclosed reasons. This will be the second new Trader Joe’s to open in Texas since 2017. It was proceeded by a location in the DFW suburb of Coppell, which opened last week. The new Sugar Land location also appears to be the final nail in the coffin for a planned location at Cypresswood and 249. While grand opening festivities have yet to be revealed, employees will likely hand out leis to the first customers.
Very happy to see that SL finally has its own Trader Joe’s now! The store is definitely going to do well, and will defy the phony argument that SL’s demographics work against such stores thriving here.
That being said, how could Sugar Land’s new TJ’s have scuttled plans for a TJ’s in the Champions/Tomball area? Especially considering that was from 2014? Especially considering how NW Harris is worlds apart from SL in terms of distance (with another TJ’s on the way over from SL)? That part of the Houston area has grown a lot since then, and there is a huge market between Cypress and Magnolia to build on.
