Retail News: pOpshelf closing multiple Houston area locations

Early last month, retailer Dollar General announced it would close 141 stores by the end of the year. The closings would be split between 96 Dollar General stores and 45 pOpshelf locations. pOpshelf is a concept Dollar General uses to compete with retailers like Five Below, skewing to younger, more affluent shoppers. The closings are not unheard of as Dollar General keeps a relatively healthy base of stores, but the much smaller footprint of pOpshelf means those closings will be much more impactful. pOpshelf first debuted in Houston in 2022, just as their merchandise rose above $5. As prices in the stores have continued to rise, pOpshelf has struggled to find its footing. At the end of last year, Dollar General tried a merchandise refresh, bringing in big brand names, but this seems to have had little effect. Closing sales have already begun at multiple pOpshelf locations in Houston, but reports are that the stores are being closed once a week to restock. As of this article, Dollar General has yet to publish a list of locations that will close, but HHR has been able to identify the following stores as closing.

2392 S Texas 6, Houston, TX 77077
4042 Lake Shore Harbour Dr, Missouri City, TX 77459
2581 Town Center Blvd N, Sugar Land, TX 77479
5650 Farm to Market 1960 Rd W, Houston, TX 77069

  1. if I could get an answer that would be great, do you know the exact date that they would close to restock. Does it say it on the paper on the door because i just can’t read it. The letters are too small.
