Retail News: Taco Cabana quietly shutters multiple Houston stores

The former Two Pesos/Taco Cabana at Kirby and 59 is one of six in the Houston area that have recently shuttered.

Fast casual Tex-Mex chain Taco Cabana quietly closed six Houston locations over the past month. The restaurant chain was founded in 1978 in San Antonio and has been through quite a few owners since the founding family took the company public in the early 90s. Around 2001, Taco Cabana was taken private after Carrols Restaurant Group purchased it. The chain was paired with Florida-based Pollo Tropical from the former Fiesta Restaurant Group, which would be spun off in 2012. Under Fiesta, Pollo Tropical came and left Texas, and Taco Cabana continued chugging along. Cosmetic updates were applied across the chain; however, Fiesta Restaurant Group failed to keep up the expansion drives that helped Taco Cabana grow into a decently sized regional chain. In 2021, Yadav Enterprises Inc. purchased Taco Cabana and continues to own the chain to this day. Under Yadav’s ownership, Taco Cabana restarted expansion, but has faced many setbacks. Yadav is one of the largest Jack in the Box franchisees, and recently purchased the ailing Del Taco from JITB. It seems the Taco Cabana closings may be related to external pressures from other ventures rather than a direct reflection of Taco Cabana’s performance. Similar closings have been taking place in San Antonio.
