Retail News: Sysco makes plans to buy Restaurant Depot

Sysco To Go is located in the Town & Country area, just a stones throw from Syco’s Corporate HQ.

Distribution giant Sysco announced on Monday its plans to acquire Jetro Restaurant Depot. Restaurant Depot is a well-established cash-and-carry wholesaler that has been in Houston since 2005. The chain traces its heritage to South African billionaire Nathan Kirsh, who helped found Jetro Cash & Carry in 1976. Jetro eventually merged with competitor Restaurant Depot, combining their operations under the name Jetro Restaurant Depot. The chain operates on a cash-and-carry model, with limited displays, advertising, and sales support. Recently, Sysco has experimented with opening its own cash-and-carry concept, Sysco To Go. Compared to the two stores, Sysco To Go is smaller than a standard restaurant depot and focuses on Sysco products. However, the commonality between the two concepts is that they both cater to customers who don’t necessarily need a full truck delivery. However, with Restaurant Depot’s operations differing in scope and size, this raises questions about the future of Sysco To Go.
