Retail News: Mi Tienda sets sights on Sharpstown for its next location

Before I recently learned about Mi Tienda’s return, I had heard rumblings that Mi Tienda was considered a “dead banner” beyond use as a store brand.

Based on permits filed this week, Mi Tienda may be headed for Sharpstown. Mi Tienda is a Hispanic-oriented grocery store chain run by HEB, with two current locations, both in the Houston area. The filings provide an address of 7140 Southwest Fwy, Houston, TX 77074, which does not correspond to any existing structure and is shown on Google Maps as the same parcel as PlazAmericas Mall, formerly known as Sharpstown Mall. While this vague address does not help us confirm where this new store will be placed, we can make a couple of educated guesses. The property owner listed on the permit is Baker Katz, the mall’s owner, which limits where the new store can be located. The former department store spaces of Foley’s, Montgomery Ward, and JCPenney, and their surrounding parking lots, are all owned by outside companies. Baker Katz owns the core of the mall and the adjacent parking lots, including the Northwest corner of the property. The corner space is large enough to contain the proposed 99,000-square-foot store and is adjacent to the development of a new dance hall. Another potential placement could be closer to the freeway. For this theory to work, the parking garage next to the freeway would likely need to be demolished, and the store built in its place. The space is smaller, but it would be doable with a two-story structure. It would, however, make more sense given the Southwest Freeway address.

  1. Hey so I want to make a shout out about the Mcdonalds in Holcombe in Houston that was the oldest Mcdonalds to exist and operational until recently and on May of 2026, it got demolished and soon will be rebuilt to a minimalistic mcdonalds. The most unique part of the Mcdonalds was the Playplace that was physically split from the restaurant itself. (You had to partially walk outdoors to get to the Playplace) Anyways, 80s Mcdonalds building in Holcombe, you will be missed.
