This Week in Demolition, the big story is 2100 Memorial Drive. Originally built as a, Holiday Inn, opening in 1970, the location made it to 1986, before shutting its doors as a hotel. For the next 10 years, the vacant hotel would become an eyesore looming above Buffalo Bayou. While initial plans to convert the space into senior living date all the way back to 1987, plans were delayed for multiple reasons. The City of Houston invested a considerable sum of money early on, expecting to receive federal support for the planned old-folks home. However, these funds never came, and the project essentially sat in limbo until a private developer purchased the property and moved ahead with the established plans to create a rent-controlled senior living complex in the former hotel. For the next 20 years, 2100 Memorial would finally serve its new purpose as low-cost housing for seniors. However, in 2017 Hurricane Harvey devastated this section of Buffalo Bayou, substantially flooding buildings that had previously only seen small amounts of water during the worst storms. After the storm passed, the property owner attempted to evict the tenants with plans to redevelop the property, this was blocked by an injunction that allowed some residents to stay until late 2020. Based on reports online, it seems like the property owners only made the most basic repairs possible and by 2019, had finally received approval to demolish and rebuild the structure. According to discussion on HAIF, it appears that the new incarnation of this building will again contain rent controlled senior living spaces, but will be a low-rise spread out complex as opposed to the current mid-rise tower. Also, worth checking out this week are the first three homes on the list, even if you’re not into architecture they’re unique homes for Houston.
This is a list of the buildings which received a City of Houston demolition permit the week before this post.

Way back when I took some photos of this for my Houston blog. I can believe it used to be a Holiday Inn but the access to and from Memorial Drive (already iffy as far as traffic required) is quite limited, as is access from the other direction.
