Retail News: Gordon Food Service Stores Open Tomorrow

The GFS at 649 S Mason Rd, Katy, TX 77450

Tuesday, March 14th, will mark the first new entry of a national grocer into Houston in over ten years. The announcement from GFS confirms some of what HHR had already reported, specifically that six new Gordon Food Service Stores will open in the Houston area. The stores will open in two waves, with the North Oaks, Westheimer, Katy, and League City stores opening tomorrow. Both Antoine at Pinemont and the Braeswood Square store will open at a later yet unknown date. Gordon Food Service stores aim to attract business clients and families, serving as a meet-in-the-middle between a standard grocer and a wholesale club. GFS does not require a membership but does offer a free loyalty program for businesses and nonprofits. While operating in a middle space between grocer and wholesaler, GFS will include some features Houstonians have grown accustomed to in the grocery market. Including both cooked and ready-to-heat Grab and Go meals, a Tortilleria, and online order pickup. These stores are partially the result of Gordon Food Service’s purchase of the Glazier Foods Company, a family-owned wholesaler.

The Houston market is growing ripe for competition with HEB’s new focus on DFW and the potential of the Kroger-Albertsons merger to kill off some Kroger or Randalls stores. Gordon Food Service seems interested in Houston and may have plans for more stores throughout the area. While we’ll have to wait and see how this pans out, there’s no doubt GFS has put a good amount of time and thought into its expansion here.
