Wholesale supplier GFS has completed the initial build-out of 10 stores across the Houston area. This is a significant achievement, making GFS the first new chain grocer to take on Houston since The Fresh Market bowed out in 2016. GFS first came to the area in 2014 with the acquisition of Glazier Foods Company, a local distributor of mainly frozen foods. After spending a few years integrating Glazier under the GFS umbrella, HHR broke the news that GFS Stores would be coming to Houston in early 2022. Later that year, we identified the first wave of locations, and by the start of 2023, the first Gordon Food Service stores in Houston opened. Since then, GFS has had to adapt its operations to the Houston market. One of those adaptions was naming new stores Gordon Restaurant Market and streamlining certain departments to better cater to professional customers versus the more traditional consumer and professional mix GFS has enjoyed in its home base of the Midwest. Despite some hiccups early on, GFS seems to have found a good niche here, and while no other stores are publically on the docket, we will likely see continued expansion in Texas.
